Port Hole Inn, under new ownership, offering dockside carryout
Fans of the Port Hole Inn’s fried catfish and chicken can now pick up carry-out orders dockside at the Lake Lemon restaurant, thanks to new owners Tom and Rob Sands.
The brothers installed a new pier this month after purchasing the restaurant at 8939 East Southshore Drive from longtime owners Richard and Karen Hollcraft, who had operated the business since March 1996.
“The were looking to relax and retire, and I was looking for a project,” said Tom Sands, who has owned a vacation home on Lake Lemon since 1989.
Sands, whose day job is being a manufacturer’s representative for a steel shingle company in Indianapolis, said bartender Christy Robertson and cook Donny Knopp will continue to manage the day-to-day operations. Both have worked at the Port Hole for about 10 years.
New menu items include barbecued ribs and pulled pork.
“We both grew up on a large hog farm, so this was a natural choice,” Sands said. “We may add pizza and a few other things in the future.”
In April 2008, a fire later determined to be arson damaged part of the Port Hole Inn. Afterwards the Hollcrafts remodeled and reopened the popular restaurant.
Sands said he always liked the Port Hole because it reminds him of remote areas of Tennessee and Kentucky, “the way its tucked away down in a ravine.”
The Port Hole Inn will continue to offer live music on most Friday and Saturday nights. Hours are noon to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and noon to midnight Friday and Saturday. Sands said a new website and Facebook page are in the works.
